Storm damage restoration

Storm damage restoration and repair in Toledo, OH

When wind, hail, snow, or ice damages your home, you need a clear next step. Blackridge Exteriors inspects, repairs, and restores roofs, siding, gutters, and windows across Toledo and Northwest Ohio, and our team also assists with the insurance claims process.

Storm damage that affects Northwest Ohio homes

Homes in Toledo and the surrounding area deal with strong thunderstorm winds and hail in the warmer months, and heavy snow and ice in winter. Each one damages an exterior in a different way, and some of that damage is hard to spot from the ground.

Wind

High winds can lift, crease, or tear off shingles, pull siding panels loose, and bend or detach gutters. Wind can also drive rain under lifted shingles and flashing, which may not show up until a leak or ceiling stain appears.

Hail

Hail can bruise or crack shingles, knock loose the protective granules on asphalt shingles, dent gutters, downspouts, and metal trim, and crack or puncture vinyl siding and window screens.

Heavy snow and ice

Snow and ice add weight to a roof. Ice that builds up along the eaves can stop melting snow from draining, and that water can back up under shingles. The weight of ice and snow can also pull gutters away from the house.

What homeowners insurance generally covers

The Ohio Department of Insurance notes that most damage caused by wind, hail, heavy snow, and ice is generally covered by a standard property insurance policy after deductibles are met. Flood damage typically is not covered by a standard policy.

That is a general rule, not a promise. Your own policy, your deductible, and your insurer's review of the cause of the damage decide what is paid on your claim.

Recently had siding fall off due to the high winds and this knowledgeable group understands what needs to be done. Great communication and they did all of the work so I didn't have to do anything! I highly recommend this company.

What to do in the first 24 to 48 hours

Safety comes first. Damage to the outside of your home can wait a few hours. An injury cannot.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe. Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to your utility.
  2. Do not enter any part of the home that looks structurally damaged until it has been checked.
  3. Stay off the roof. A storm-damaged roof can be slick or weakened. Look from the ground and leave the close inspection to a professional.
  4. Take photos and video of the damage, inside and out, before anything is moved or repaired. Our storm damage documentation checklist covers what to capture.
  5. Prevent further damage where you can do it safely, such as covering a broken window or putting a bucket under a leak. Keep receipts for anything you buy.
  6. Contact your insurance company or agent to report the damage and ask how your policy handles it.
  7. Schedule an inspection so you know the full extent of the damage.

What a storm damage inspection looks at

A good inspection covers the whole exterior, not just the spot that caught your eye. Here is what we check and why it matters.

Roof

Missing, lifted, creased, or cracked shingles, hail bruising and granule loss, damaged flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights, and signs that water has gotten in.

Siding

Cracked, punctured, dented, or loose panels, sections blown off by wind, and openings where water could reach the wall behind the siding.

Gutters and downspouts

Dents, separated seams, sagging or detached runs, and downspouts that no longer carry water away from the foundation.

Windows

Cracked or broken glass, torn screens, damaged frames and trim, and gaps that let water in.

From a quick repair to full replacement

Not every storm means a new roof. Sometimes the right fix is a few shingles, a section of siding, or one run of gutter. Other times the damage is widespread enough that a patch would not hold up. Either way, you get an honest recommendation with clear, upfront pricing and no pressure.

Blackridge handles roofing, siding, seamless gutters, and windows, so one contractor can restore the whole exterior instead of you coordinating several trades. Storm work follows the same process as every other job:

  1. Schedule Your Free Estimate. We inspect the damage and document what we find.
  2. Get a Clear Plan. You receive a detailed written estimate and an honest recommendation on repair or replacement.
  3. We Get to Work. Skilled crews install quality materials and keep the job site clean.
  4. Final Walkthrough. We walk through the finished work with you.

How we assist with the insurance claims process

The claim is between you and your insurance company. Ohio law requires anyone who is paid to negotiate or settle a property insurance claim on a homeowner's behalf to be licensed as a public insurance adjuster, with limited exceptions such as attorneys, and the Ohio Department of Insurance advises homeowners not to give a contractor power of attorney or let a contractor negotiate or settle their claim. We stay in the contractor's lane, which is the documentation side.

What that looks like in practice: the inspection is free, and it includes photos and video that we share with you. We meet your adjuster on site, every time. We prepare the documentation for what it takes to build the job correctly, covering code requirements, what can and cannot be repaired, and the full scope of the work, and we send that documentation to your carrier. Supplements are Donovan's specialty. What we do not do is argue your coverage or settle your claim for you.

If a claim is denied, we have a set process: we re-inspect the roof and put together updated documentation for you to take back to your insurer. We never waive or absorb a deductible, and we do not use insurance-contingency agreements. Our contracts give you three business days to cancel in writing.

Should I call my insurance company or a contractor first?

Make sure everyone is safe and take reasonable steps to prevent further damage first. The Ohio Department of Insurance advises contacting your insurance company promptly if you believe your property was damaged, and your policy may set requirements for how quickly you report a loss. Many homeowners also schedule an inspection early so they understand the full extent of the damage.

Will my insurance pay for a new roof?

No contractor can promise that. Your insurer decides based on your policy, the cause of the damage, your deductible, and whether your policy settles roof claims at replacement cost or actual cash value. Our guide to how a roof insurance claim works explains each of these.

Can Blackridge negotiate my claim with my insurance company?

No. In Ohio, anyone paid to negotiate or settle a property insurance claim for a homeowner must be a licensed public insurance adjuster, with limited exceptions such as attorneys. We assist by inspecting and documenting damage, providing a detailed written estimate, and explaining how the process works.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. We provide free estimates with clear, upfront pricing. If you request an estimate through our website, we respond within 48 hours. Storm damage inspections are free too, and you get copies of the photos and video from the inspection.

Do I have to file an insurance claim to get storm repairs?

No. Some homeowners pay for storm repairs directly, for example when the cost is close to their deductible. You get the same inspection and the same honest recommendation either way.

Do you meet the adjuster at my house?

Yes, every time. Donovan is there for the adjuster's inspection so the damage and the scope of work get looked at together rather than separately.

Do you do emergency tarping?

Yes. If the roof is open, getting it covered comes before anything else. Call 419-233-1888 and we will tell you what we can do and when.

Can you repair the inside of the house too?

Yes. Storm restoration includes interior work after a leak, such as drywall, ceilings and insulation, not just the roof that let the water in.

Will you waive my deductible?

No. We never waive or absorb a deductible. Anyone who offers to is asking you to take part in insurance fraud, and the Ohio Department of Insurance warns homeowners about exactly that.
